I realised I hadn’t done a book review in some time, so I figured I’d post one today! Plus, I just wrote one yesterday for my school’s book club, so why not multi-purpose it?
The book I’m reviewing is….. (drumroll please)…. Divergent! Oh, yeah, you probably already knew that from the title.
Anyways, let’s get on with the book review!
The (rather legnthy) blurb off Goodreads:
In Beatrice Prior’s dystopian Chicago world, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can’t have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.
During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles alongside her fellow initiates to live out the choice they have made. Together they must undergo extreme physical tests of endurance and intense psychological simulations, some with devastating consequences. Divergent is a great book for you if you love all of the same old dystopian tropes. If you get annoyed by these tropes easily, then this book probably isn’t for you. That being said, I thought that Divergent was a pretty good book, with a few things that could have been a bit better.
There wasn’t a whole lot of interaction between the characters, other than Four and Tris. Also, the characters felt a little disconnected from the reader, and the pacing was a bit fast at times.
One thing I liked about Divergent was the action. There’s a lot of jumping off trains, zip lining, jumping on trains and other things like that. Another thing I enjoyed was that Tris could’ve chosen to stay with her family in Abnegation, but instead decided to make her own decision and choose Dauntless.
Overall, it’s a pretty good book, with lots of the normal YA dystopian tropes and action. It could’ve had more character development, but oh well. I’d give it a 3.5/5 stars.
